Plans for February 28 to March 4

Monday or Friday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 16-18
  • Discuss With Partners: Students will share their quotes from the novel that they gathered for chapters 16-18 with a partner.  They will then select one significant quote to share with the class, explaining the context for and significance of the quote in relation to the major themes for the novel. They will be encouraged to closely analyze the word choice, syntax, and possible symbolism of the quotes in order to determine their significance.
  • Type I Quick Write: The “Doubling” Theme
  • Discuss: Quick Write responses
  • Close Reading Connection: “In that manner Hareton …” (181).
  • View: Wuthering Heights (Paramount Pictures, 1992)
    • DVD Chapters 11 – 18 (38:00-1:08:00)  (approx. 30 minutes)
    • Corresponds to chapters 10-18 in the novel
  • Closing Activity: Discuss the film’s interpretation of these chapters.
  • Homework: Read chapters 19-21 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz.  Be sure to also find one significant quote for each of the three chapters.

Plans for February 23 to February 25

Wednesday (B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 10-12
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Close Reading Analysis Activity
  • Note-Taking: Students will take some basic notes on writing for the HSPA’s expository writing prompt.
  • ½ Block HSPA Prep: Students will go to the media center to complete an expository writing assignment on Criterion.
  • Homework: Read chapters 13, 14, and 15 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz.  Be sure to also fill out the study guide questions (extra credit) pertaining to these chapters AND find one significant quote for each of the three chapters (required). 
Thursday or Friday (A/B)
  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 13-15 (open-ended)
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • With Partners: Students will share their quotes from the novel that they gathered for chapters 13-15 with a partner.  They will then select one significant quote to share with the class, explaining the context for and significance of the quote in relation to the major themes for the novel.   • HSPA Reading Comprehension – Persuasive: Students will have 40 minutes to complete multiple choice and open-ended questions with a practice HSPA persuasive passage.
  • Discuss: We will then review the correct answers for the multiple choice questions and discuss possible ways of addressing the open-ended questions. 
  • Homework: Read chapters 16-18 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz.  Be sure to also fill out the study guide questions (extra credit) pertaining to these chapters AND find one significant quote for each of the three chapters (required).

Plans for February 14 to February 18

Monday or Tuesday (A/B)

  • Quack! Quiz: Vol. 7 Part 2
  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 4-7
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Wuthering Heights Family Tree: Students will receive copies of a family tree for the Earnshaw and Linton families.  We will discuss the relationships between characters to ensure that all students understand the differences between the “Catherines” and other characters with similar names.
  • HSPA Prep: Students will learn some strategies for the reading comprehension section of the HSPA exam. 
  • Reading Comprehension – Narrative: Students will have 30 minutes to complete multiple choice and open-ended questions with a practice HSPA narrative passage.
  • Discuss: We will then review the correct answers for the multiple choice questions and discuss possible ways of addressing the open-ended questions. 
  • Homework: Read chapter 8 and 9 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.  Study Guide for chapters 1 through 9 due next block!

Wednesday or Thursday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 8 and 9
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Study Guide (chapters 10-17): Students will receive copies of the study guide for chapters 10 through 17.  In addition to answering study guide questions in the way that they did for the first 9 chapters, students will also need to find one significant quote for each chapter.  They will be required to explain the significance and context of each quote that they select, ideally relating the quote to one of the major themes. 
  • Major Themes in Wuthering Heights: Students will view and take notes on a PowerPoint presentation, focusing on the major themes in the novel.
  • View: 1992 Wuthering Heights with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes
    • DVD chapters 1 through 10 (runtime: 38:40)
    • Corresponds to novel chapters 1 through 9
  • Closing Activity: We will discuss as a class the students’ reactions to this film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
  • Homework: Read chapters 10, 11, and 12 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz.  Be sure to also fill out the study guide questions pertaining to these chapters AND find one significant quote for each of the three chapters.

Plans for February 7 to February 11

Monday (B):

  • View: Quack! Volume 7 Part 2
  • Note-taking: Students will take notes on Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats, and we will discuss the thematic focus for the day’s poetry. 
  • Read: Shelley’s “Ozymandias," Keats’s “Ode to a Grecian Urn,” and “When I Have Fears that I May Cease to Be.”
  • Create: Illustrations of Keat's Urn using the imagery from the poem.

Tuesday or Wednesday (A/B):

  • Review: Quack! Vol. 7 Part 2 Words
  • Read and Discuss: Introduction to Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights, and the context in which the novel was written (handout)
  • View: Five Things You Need To Know Before Reading Wuthering Heights
  • Begin Reading: Chapter 1 together as a class, pausing to discuss key passages, plot developments, the narrator’s perspective, and answer any questions that students may have. 
  • Closing Activity: Students will receive a study guide for chapters 1 through 9.  They will be responsible for working on (and completing this study guide) by the end of chapter 9.  They will have the last few minutes of class to begin working on the study guide with a partner. 
  • Homework: Read chapters 1 -3 and be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.  You will also have a Quack! quiz, so be sure to also review your words.

Thursday or Friday (A/B):

  • Quack! Quiz: Vol. 7 Part 2
  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 1-3
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Type I Quick Write
  • Begin Reading: Chapter 4 (pgs. 32-34), discussing how Mr. Lockwood is now going to hear a story from Mrs. Dean, who takes over narrating the story of Heathcliff and Catherine’s childhood. 
  • Homework: Read chapter 4-7 and be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.
