Plans for February 14 to February 18

Monday or Tuesday (A/B)

  • Quack! Quiz: Vol. 7 Part 2
  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 4-7
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Wuthering Heights Family Tree: Students will receive copies of a family tree for the Earnshaw and Linton families.  We will discuss the relationships between characters to ensure that all students understand the differences between the “Catherines” and other characters with similar names.
  • HSPA Prep: Students will learn some strategies for the reading comprehension section of the HSPA exam. 
  • Reading Comprehension – Narrative: Students will have 30 minutes to complete multiple choice and open-ended questions with a practice HSPA narrative passage.
  • Discuss: We will then review the correct answers for the multiple choice questions and discuss possible ways of addressing the open-ended questions. 
  • Homework: Read chapter 8 and 9 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.  Study Guide for chapters 1 through 9 due next block!

Wednesday or Thursday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 8 and 9
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Study Guide (chapters 10-17): Students will receive copies of the study guide for chapters 10 through 17.  In addition to answering study guide questions in the way that they did for the first 9 chapters, students will also need to find one significant quote for each chapter.  They will be required to explain the significance and context of each quote that they select, ideally relating the quote to one of the major themes. 
  • Major Themes in Wuthering Heights: Students will view and take notes on a PowerPoint presentation, focusing on the major themes in the novel.
  • View: 1992 Wuthering Heights with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes
    • DVD chapters 1 through 10 (runtime: 38:40)
    • Corresponds to novel chapters 1 through 9
  • Closing Activity: We will discuss as a class the students’ reactions to this film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
  • Homework: Read chapters 10, 11, and 12 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz.  Be sure to also fill out the study guide questions pertaining to these chapters AND find one significant quote for each of the three chapters. 

Friday or Wednesday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Wuthering Heights, chapters 10-12
  • Discuss: We will review key plot developments, major themes, and crucial passages from these chapters of the novel.
  • Close Reading Analysis Activity
  • Note-Taking: Students will take some basic notes on writing for the HSPA’s expository writing prompt.
  • ½ Block HSPA Prep: Students will go to the media center to complete an expository writing assignment on Criterion.
  • Homework: Read chapters 13, 14, and 15 for next class, and be prepared for a reading check quiz.  Be sure to also fill out the study guide questions pertaining to these chapters AND find one significant quote for each of the three chapters.
